Definition of Wellness
Wellness is a term that has become extremely popular in recent years. So much so that the definition of wellness has also been rendered different meanings to different people.
Some say it is a state of mind that is experienced as tranquility; others define wellness as a luxury lifestyle concept associated with fitness and spas.
Most define wellness as simply “being physically well” most of the time.
All inclusive, the generally accepted definition of wellness is:
To stay in good condition physically, mentally, and spiritually, especially through healthy choices in those areas. Having a balanced state of these parts of the psyche.
This definition of wellness seems to imply that wellness is a lifestyle choice.
And it defines wellness to include not just being healthy physically but embraces a holistic concept of health that encompasses our whole being - body, mind and spirit.
However, as you will come to know, wellness is not given to choice.
Wellness is a natural human condition that has become negatively conditioned throughout the passages of time by the lifestyle choices we made.
Thus wellness ought to be viewed as a life purpose; a wellness way of life.
In order to fully appreciate wellness as a life purpose, as a way of life, we must look at what affects our natural condition of well-being. These would involve looking at those factors that can disrupt our natural balance.
To live up to the definition of wellness, we must attain physical, mental, emotional, spiritual, social, occupational and intellectual wellness.
When you achieve balance, congruency in those areas, you naturally become optimally alive and vibrant.
It is said that if you feel tired and worn out each day, then you are not living in a state of wellness. In other words, you are not living your life to its fullest or enjoying life.
Almost like a yogi would tell you if you were into meditation, in wellness, you want to achieve a balanced state so life can be enjoyable.
The human body is a system. Every system has its needs. The first step is to get in touch with your needs.
How do you do that?
Commit to honoring your personal wellness each morning. Begin each day with asking how you feel - your emotional wellness check-up.
Understand that your emotional wellness can be affected by what you put into your body and what you do with your body.
So make nutrition wellness your beginning step to the higher goal of wellness. Understand how toxins affect your body and why internal body cleansing is just as important as bathing your body.
The next step towards wellness is to be aware of your thoughts, especially your thought system. Your thoughts affect your emotional well-being. And just like food, negative thoughts that you put into your body create harmful consequences that may be impossible to undo if undetected for a long time.
Therefore, be aware of how you react to things that happen to you. More importantly, to be aware how your specific reactions to circumstances can have negative consequences to both yourself and others.
Learn to build emotional wellness. Everyone has stress in his or her life somewhere. The stress itself is bad, but worse is the way we react to it.
Stress is a dangerous, venomous enemy of wellness. It can lay its hands on us without us even knowing in some cases.
Stress counteracts everything that wellness is. Basically, stress un-defines wellness. This is where mental wellness is very important. If we are mentally well, we can recognize the symptoms of stress so we are able to deal with it.
Learn to communicate wellness. Communicate wellness to yourself, your family, friends and especially at the workplace - the source of most stress. Another way of saying this is: Be life giving. Communicate encouragement, cooperation and confidence to your fellow workers.
Another significant aspect in our definition of wellness that ought to be given your undivided attention is spiritual wellness. You must have something to believe in, something to hold onto. This gives you a base to work from.
Finally, if you have achieved a level of wellness as describe above, then it would not be long before you come to realise living and organizing your life around love simplifies and converges everything I have attempted to explain on the definition of wellness.
In a few words, wellness means the state of being fully human; yet fully alive to life. In a sense, this level of attainment epitomizes the definition of wellness
To attain wellness at this level, of course, would demand of you to make proper choices in food, social contact, work and exercise. Then learn how to respond appropriately instead of react to life. Remain calm and try to work things out rationally. More importantly, you must evolve your personal character and personal strength in order to experience this state of wellness that I speak of.
You cannot always control your environment or your surroundings, but you can control yourself and what you do by seeing your relationship with everything in a new light.
To realise that wellness is not an option but your life purpose is a BIG step towards evolving to the definition of wellness.
Commit to the wellness way. The world and all its inhabitants can benefit tremendously from one more person contributing to making this world fully human; fully alive to life.
