Your brain is always emitting electrical currents in pulses or waves called brainwaves at any given moment, be it awake or asleep.
Brainwaves are identified by their rates of vibrations measured in cycles per second (hertz).
There are 4 commonly known brainwave patterns in human. They are Beta, Alpha, Theta and Delta. While all four brainwave patterns are pulsing all the time, usually one of them is dominant at a given time.
For example, when you are awake and active at work, your brain emits more beta vibrations than the rest. And when you are in deep sleep, your consciousness is mainly in delta state.
Typically, our ears register sounds from 20 Hz to 20000 Hz. Any vibration below 20 Hz and above 20 000 Hz are inaudible to the ear. Though they are inaudible to the ears, our brains, nevertheless, does register and detect these vibrations.
These vibrations give rise to cycles or patterns. By looking at these patterns, one can easily tell what state of mind you are in at any given moment. One can tell if your are angry, anxious, relax, peaceful or sleeping by just looking at your brainwaves on the EEG screen.
The Beta brainwave state is associated with a heightened state of alertness and focused concentration. When your mind is actively engaged in mental activities, the dominant brainwave state will be Beta.
The Beta brainwave state corresponds to frequencies ranging from 13Hz to 40Hz.
Alpha brainwaves are slower in frequency than Beta brainwaves and represent a state of relaxed mental awareness or reflection.
Alpha brainwave states are typically associated with contemplation, visualization, problem solving and accessing deeper levels of creativity.
The Alpha brainwave state corresponds to frequencies ranging from 8Hz to 12Hz.
Theta brainwaves are even slower in frequency and represent a state of deep relaxation and meditation, enhanced creativity, stress relief, light sleep and dreaming.
Theta brainwave states have been used in meditation for centuries.
Research has proven thirty minutes a day of Theta meditation can dramatically improve a person's overall health and well-being. Theta meditation has also been known to cause the need for less sleep.
The Theta brainwave state corresponds to frequencies ranging from 4Hz to 8Hz.
Delta brainwaves are the slowest in frequency and represent a state of deep dreamless sleep.
Delta brainwave states have long been associated with healing. While Delta brainwave states usually only occur in deep sleep, it is possible to train yourself to remain awake while reaching the Delta state to experience even deeper levels of meditation and awareness.
The Delta brainwave state corresponds to frequencies from 0Hz to 4Hz
Gamma brainwave states are the most rapid in frequency. They have received the least attention and research, although more attention is currently being paid to them than in years past.
Research has indicated at moments when bursts of precognition or high-level information processing occur, your brainwaves briefly reach the Gamma state.
The Gamma brainwave state corresponds to frequencies of 40Hz or higher.
Are you intimidated by the phrase “brainwave entrainment”?
It’s just a scientific term used in a technology that can vastly improve your life in almost every area. But before we get to that, let me give you an appreciation of what that is.
You will have entered a library many times, haven’t you? Now, have you ever experienced the feeling of being easily absorbed into reading any book in the library.
Have you felt the urge of borrowing these books home, only to find you are not so predisposed to reading them at home compared to reading them at the library.
What you have experienced in the library is a classic example of how your brain resonates to a dominant mental vibration in the library. Everyone’s brainwave pattern is pulsing at the lower beta to higher alpha range. It’s a relaxed state that your brain entrains to that makes you amenable to reading.
When you are reading or watching TV, your brainwave pulses at a relaxed state that is known as Alpha frequency range (9-14 hertz).
Let’s consider entering a discotheque. What happens to your state of mind as you enter and linger there for some 6 mins. Do you experience a change in your physiology, mental and emotional state? Your brain has just been entrained to the surrounding vibration that is pulsing strongly at a high beta stage (15 - 30 hertz).
By placing electrodes on your head, one can see your brainwave patterns pulsing as waves on the screen of an EEG machine. These waves pulses in waves from low to high amplitudes and are measured as frequency in Hertz. By looking at these patterns, one can easily tell what state of mind you are in at any given moment.
A research paper published in Scientific American (Oct 1973) by Dr. Gerald Oyster, a research scientist at Mt. Sinai Medical Centre in New York, revealed about the benefits of brainwave entrainment from his test done since the 1950s.
He found that by playing two coherent sounds of differing frequencies into each ear, the brain would produce a third "binaural beat" at a specific frequency INSIDE the mind... thereby directly influencing the brainwaves and the state of mind.
For example, when a sound stimulus of 200 hertz is introduced at one ear; a 210 hertz is introduced at the other ear, the difference of the two frequencies is registered in the brain as 10 hertz (alpha state). This difference in frequency that the brain entrains to is called the binaural beat.
The brain entrains to binaural beats and if the sound stimulus continues, your brainwave will resonate to this frequency. This response of the brain to resonate to an external stimulus frequency is known in scientific jargon as "Frequency Following Response".
As your state of mind is determined by your dominant brainwave pattern you are producing at any one time, the benefits derive from brainwave entrainment through using audio technology are absolutely mind blowing!
