Whenever the subject of sexual dysfunction turns up, I never fail to hear maca root mention alongside Viagra,
It has been called the "Peruvian Viagra", a healthy alternative to the drug sildenafil citrate (Viagra).
Grown at very high altitudes of the Andean Mountains, the maca herb is commonly used as nutritional medicinal food among native Peruvians.
For male and female, it serves as a great hormone balancer.
Among my women friends that are taking maca root or maca powder, I am told it alleviates PMS and menopausal symptoms.
They no longer complain of hot flushes, swinging moods, depression and menstrual pain.
But enhancing libido and erectile function in men? Elevating it to the function of Viagra?
There are some things that I won't do even though I am known to go to the edge to experiment before I would write about it.
Taking Viagra is one of them.
And it also took me quite a while to remove my skepticism of maca because I never believed any herb could do that.
To validate it base on the vast amount of information online is one thing; personal experience is another. I never write about things I hardly experience for myself.
And when I hear friends say it works, their experience is NOT transferable to my own. Their enthusiasm only serves to encourage trying it.
Maca & L-Arginine Formula
And so I took maca in standardized pure root extract, with a guaranteed potency of macaenes and macamides.
I started with 3 capsules (900mg total) per day for a week, progressing to 6 capsules (1800mg ) per day. While taking Maca, I put on hold taking my other supplements for two months.
I had another friend who started at the same time as I had. In his case, he felt he had a serious loss of libido. He is in his late 40s.
My friend remarked a revival of feeling a strong attraction and desire for the opposite sex. It continued to be sustainable for him. Erectile function improved but could not be said to be more than satisfactory.
In my case, I felt increased energy and alertness. I could not say in a measurable way if libido and erectile function were enhanced.
And so I left it at that. I did not think much about it.
Since I had one more bottle of maca root capsules ( I bought to last three months), I decided not to waste it. I consume it together with my regular supplements - Total Balance Premium For men .
I was amazed!
Within a matter of days of taking Total Balance Premium For men with maca root capsules, I could feel tremendous boost to my libido and erectile function.
I started to wonder why.
I got my friend to do likewise.
And sure enough, he was experiencing heightened libido, and on erectile function, he was unbelievably pleased!
After much research, I understood what was happening.
To achieve erectile function, both the Viagra drug and the Maca herb adopt similar action pathway - to affect nitric oxide in the body.
Between the Viagra drug and the Maca herb, there is, however, a tactical difference in the way each act on nitric oxide.
The function of nitric oxide is to enable muscles surrounding blood vessels that supply to the penis to relax.
This relaxation enables blood vessels in the penis to dilate, thereby increasing blood flow, which helps maintain an erection.
Viagra works by blocking the enzyme called PDE5 from destroying nitric oxide.
On the other hand, L-Arginine (found in Total balance Men's Premium) is used to make nitric oxide in the body.
This could well explain why Maca root works so wonderfully as the "Peruvian Viagra" provided you combine it with taking L-Arginine.
